More about Dachshunds including Standards

The primary difference between Standard Dachshunds and Miniature Dachshunds is their size. Standard Dachshunds are much larger than Miniature Dachshunds,

The average Standard measures 7 to 12 inches tall, while the average Miniature measures 4 to 7 inches tall. Additionally, Standards weigh anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds, while Miniatures only weigh 10 to 12 pounds total. This is the primary difference between these two dog breeds, and it is important to know this about them.

There aren’t very many behavioural differences between Standards and Miniatures. They are both medium to small breed dogs, with a penchant for mischief and stubbornness. However, they are highly trainable and capable dogs at any size. Many dog owners may argue that Miniatures are more vocal and more prone to anxiety than their larger Standard cousins, but this is could be due to inadequate training.  In my experience I would say the Standards seem to be a little more chilled out generally.

The final difference between Standards and Miniatures lies in their lifespan. Miniatures live slightly longer than Standards based on their size difference alone. For example, Standards live anywhere from twelve to fourteen years, while Miniatures live an average of 13 to 16 years.

However, it is important to note that both of these breeds can suffer from health issues due to their elongated spines and short legs. Keeping your dachshund fit and active, no matter the size, is one of the most important things for you to consider.

IVDD  is a degenerative condition that affects the discs of the spine casing severe inflammation and pain. With the latest statistics being that 1 in 4 miniature dachshunds could at some point suffer with some degree of IVDD  this is one of the main health concerns with this breed. While many will recover in time others will be at risk of permanent damage potentially resulting in paralysis.

All our puppies leave being covered with 4 weeks insurance and we strongly advise all our owners to carry on with this or find another policy to cover their pup in case of any problems in the future.  Pups can be accident prone and it can be difficult to stop them jumping off furniture etc  We use pet ramps/steps which do help.

Our Goals:

As Kennel Club Assured Breeders are always looking to produce top quality puppies and to keep improving the breed.  We select only the very best health tested stud dogs with fantastic pedigrees to put to our beautiful girls.

Here are some of the things we look for in our dogs

(Dachshund Breed Standard set out by the Kennel Club)

General Appearance:

Moderately long in proportion to height, with no exaggeration. Compact, well-muscled body, with enough ground clearance, not less than one quarter of the height at the withers, to allow free movement. Height at the withers should be half the length of the body, measured from breastbone to the rear of thigh. Bold, defiant carriage of head and intelligent expression.

Characteristics:

Intelligent, lively, courageous to the point of rashness, obedient. Especially suited to going to ground because of low build, very strong forequarters and forelegs. Long, strong jaw, and immense power of bite and hold. Excellent nose, persevering hunter and tracker. Essential that functional build, size and proportions ensure working ability.

Temperament:

Faithful, versatile and good tempered.
